Set a trigger key of your choosing (say ; or /) and type a word after it to drop the matching emoji straight into your text, so ;smile becomes a smiley without opening the system picker or leaving the keyboard. Charm would match the word against emoji names, so the everyday ones land on the obvious face or symbol, and you could keep typing without breaking flow.
