Doesn't work.

App is installed, permissions set, app is running, "spells" and "polish" are both on. It doesn't seem to work...anywhere (at least not the two places I've tried it...browser (Vivaldi) and in Apple mail).

Lets get this working for you. When Charm isn't correcting in every app at once, it's almost always just a quick permissions toggle rather than anything wrong, so this should be a fast one to sort.

Charm needs two macOS permissions to read and correct text. After an app update, macOS sometimes quietly switches these off even though they still look enabled, so the reliable fix is to remove and re-add them:

1. Reset the two permissions
Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
Go to Accessibility: if Charm is listed, select it and click the minus (–) button to remove it.
Go to Input Monitoring and do the same.
Quit Charm completely (click the menu bar icon, then Quit), and reopen it.
Charm will prompt you to grant both again. Approve them, and toggle each switch fully on.

2. Check Charm is active
Click the Charm icon in the menu bar and make sure the status shows it's running and that Spelling (Spells) is switched on.

3. Make sure neither app is blocked
In Charm's settings, under the per-app rules, check that Vivaldi and Apple Mail aren't set to have spelling turned off.

A reliable fallback in any app: manual Fix Selection
Some apps, browsers especially, don't always allow Charm to rewrite text instantly and invisibly as you type, because of how they handle their text fields internally. For those moments there's a manual mode that works everywhere: just select the text you want cleaned up and press Option + Command + V. Charm polishes the selection on the spot, spelling and grammar in one go. It's a great safety net for any app where automatic correction can't apply changes live, and many people end up using it deliberately on longer messages so they stay in full control of when corrections happen.

If that shortcut clashes with something you already use, you can change it: open Charm's settings and set Fix Selection to any key combination you like.

One quick test that helps me a lot: after the steps above, type a deliberately misspelled word (like "teh") in Apple Notes or TextEdit. If it corrects there but not in Vivaldi or Mail, that tells me it's app-specific and I'll dig in further. If it doesn't correct anywhere, it's still a permissions thing and we'll get it sorted. Either way, Fix Selection (Option + Command + V) will work in the meantime.

Let me know how you get on? Thanks.

OK I followed step one, but hit a wall right at the end. I relaunched Charm...it didn't prompt to set grant permissions, but it did show a warning message in the window "Permissions needed for Ch...". I clicked the "Fix" link, it took me back to Privacy & Security > Accessibility. Charm was in the list, so i toggled it ON. Returned to the Charm app window, but it still says “Permissions needed for Ch..." Now clicking "Fix" does nothing.

Eric, the latest update meaningfully improves Charm's permissions setup, which should make getting going smooth for you. A bit of technical context that helps here: Charm uses two separate macOS permissions, Accessibility (to read and apply text) and Input Monitoring (to detect keystrokes), and they live in two different lists in System Settings.

The new version makes that distinction much clearer: it names exactly which of the two is still needed rather than showing a generic prompt, the Fix control opens the precise settings pane for it, and there's a one-tap Restart, since macOS typically only registers a newly granted permission once the app relaunches.

Open Charm and choose Check for Updates to move to 1.0.50, then make sure Charm is switched on under both Accessibility and Input Monitoring, and you'll be all set. Any other questions please let me know?

OK, I upgraded to the new version and the "Permissions needed for Ch..." message is no longer showing. However, it's still not working. Here are some examples of typos while I've been using it over the past couple hours.

With that "Permissions needed" message gone, both permissions are now granted correctly, so the setup side is done. What you're seeing next has a clear cause, and it's quick to confirm.

Two steps:
1. Grab today's update. I just shipped 1.0.51 (Check for Updates again), it specifically improves how Charm behaves in browsers, which is directly relevant to your Vivaldi testing.
2. Run one test that isolates it. Open Apple Notes or TextEdit and type teh followed by a space.

  • If it corrects to "the" there, Charm is working as expected, and what you saw is app-specific (explained below).
  • If it doesn't correct even in Notes, tell me, that points to one specific thing and I'll have you fixed quickly.

Here's what's happening in the two apps you tested:
- Vivaldi is the key one. It's built on Chromium, and inside Chromium browsers Charm can't rewrite text live as you type, that's down to how those browsers expose their text fields to other apps, not a fault in Charm. So there it switches to Fix Selection by design: type as normal, then select the text and press Option-Command-V, and Charm cleans it up instantly. Today's update makes that switch cleaner and lighter.
- Apple Mail corrects live as you type. If Notes works but Mail doesn't, it'll be Mail set with spelling switched off in Charm's per-app rules, check that and let me know.

Run the Notes test and tell me the result, that single outcome tells me exactly where this lands. Or if you'd prefer to sort it faster, email me at support@theodorehq.com and I'll take you through it directly.

Tried to update to new version; didn't work. See image.

That one can pop up briefly right after an update lands, if the updater catches the download mid-refresh. The latest version is signed correctly, and we've tested the update on other Macs to confirm it installs cleanly, so a fresh Check for Updates should go straight through for you now. If it still balks, you can grab it directly and drag it into your Applications folder: https://www.theodorehq.com/charm/downloads

I managed to get the update installed. It's still not working in Apple Mail, Notes, or Vivaldi. However, if you're telling me that auto-correction won't work in Vivaldi (I have to manually correct), I'm also questioning the value of it overall.

I guess I'll continue to try to get it working in any app before I decide to just end the experiment and get a refund.

Glad you got the update installed. Charm does work in all of those apps, including the ones you mentioned. It just offers correction in two ways depending on the app.

Browsers and Electron-based apps hand their text to other tools in a way that isn't safe to rewrite live as you type, so rather than risk getting it wrong, Charm gives you Fix Selection, a one-shortcut cleanup that works reliably in every app on your Mac:

- Fix everything: just press Option-Command-V, no need to select anything first. Charm automatically cleans up all the text in that field in one pass.
- Fix just a part: highlight a single sentence or paragraph, then press Option-Command-V, and only that selection is touched.
It's the same shortcut everywhere, so it becomes one reliable habit rather than something that behaves differently from app to app.

And genuinely, if it still isn't the right fit for how you work, that's no problem at all, you're covered by the money-back guarantee. Just reply here or email support@theodorehq.com and I'll get a refund sorted for you, no hassle.

Jun 30

OK, well since it still doesn't work at all, and even if I could get it to work the corrections aren't automatic in the browser, yes please process a refund.

Refund has been sent. If you ever change your mind in the future and want help in getting setup, we'd be happy to help. Thank you.
